When the Gut Finds Calm, So Does Your Child
Not all microbiome tests are designed for kids.
Here are 4 things every parent needs to know before ordering a stool test for a child. 👇
1. A child’s microbiome is a living system, still under construction.
A child's microbiome goes through major shifts as they grow. When assessing microbial balance, we need to use age-specific reference ranges, not adult baselines.
2. Technology matters.
It's particularly important with kids that we get a broad view of the gut because their microbiomes are less “settled” than those of adults. Using a test that can spot imbalances and risk patterns is key. Â
3. We want to know who's there and what they’re doing.
Knowing whether key microbes are present is useful, but doesn’t tell the full story. What really matters is what they're doing. A good test will tell you who is there and what they're doing.
4. Microbial patterns can influence risk for common childhood conditions.
Early gut imbalances are linked to increased risk for eczema, asthma, food allergies, diabetes, obesity, anxiety, and even neurodevelopmental challenges. While microbiome testing can’t diagnose a condition, it can help identify patterns associated with increased vulnerability, so we can take steps to reduce that risk.
